Sawara Historic Site in Narita

Sawara

Sawara (佐原) is a small town northeast of Narita City that prospered during the Edo Period (1603-1867) as a transport hub for rice shipments into the capital. Sawara's historic center lies along a canal, and is known as "Little Edo" for its small district of preserved and restored traditional residences, merchant shops and warehouses from the Edo Period.
The canal is crossed by a number of bridges, the most interesting of which is the Ja Ja Bridge that spouts a twice hourly waterfall from its span into the canal below. Departing from this bridge are flat bottomed boat tours of the town's canal.
Also found near the Ja Ja Bridge are the Ino Tadataka Museum and his former residence. Born in Sawara, Ino Tadataka was an Edo Period surveyor who made highly accurate maps of the entire Japanese archipelago for the Tokugawa Shogunate. The museum is dedicated to displaying his work and his techniques with excellent displays and description in English.
The town is also known for its festival, the Sawara Matsuri, where floats topped by giant dolls, representing mythological Japanese warriors and heroes, are wheeled through the streets. The festival is held twice yearly in July and October. A few of the floats and other festival items can be seen year round at the Dashi Kaikan museum a short walk from the canal.

Access :

Sawara is located about 20 kilometers northeast of Narita Airport. It can be reached from Narita Station by train along the JR Narita Line (30 minutes, 500 yen, 1-2 trains per hour). The historic town center is about a 10-15 minute walk from the station.
Alternatively, Sawara can be accessed by car in about 30 minutes from Narita Airport if using the expressway (840 yen expressway tolls one way, get off at Sawara-Katori IC) or about 45 minutes by toll free roads.

Museum of Aeronautical Sciences

Museum of Aeronautical Sciences
The Museum of Aeronautical Sciences (航空科学博物館, Kōkū Kagaku Hakubutsukan) is an aviation museum located just outside of Narita Airport at the southern end of its main runway. The museum is of interest to both plane enthusiast and non enthusiasts alike with lots of real aircraft on display, as well as simulators and other hands-on activities.
Inside the museum you can see full scale replicas of historic planes and components of modern planes such as the landing gear and engine of a Boeing 747. You can also try piloting a plane at one of the museum's life sized simulators or get in the replica cockpits of a Mitsubishi Zero fighter or the Bell X-1 Glamorous Glennis.
Additionally, the museum's third floor has an outdoor observation deck with a view of the southern end of Narita Airport's runway, while the fourth floor has a restaurant, and the fifth floor houses an indoor observatory modeled after a flight control tower. Both observation areas and the restaurant have good views of planes taking off and landing.
On a yard in front of the museum there are over a dozen aircraft on display, predominantly smaller propeller planes and helicopters. Some of the aircraft can be entered, and a few come with a simulator.
Besides the museum's observation decks, there are two public viewpoints around the airport from where you can watch the action on the runway. The Sakura no Oka Observation Area is located near the southern end of the runway close to the museum, while the Sakura no Yama Observation Area is at the northern end. Observation decks are also found on each of the airport's terminal buildings.
